AT THE GRAVESIDE Opening Statements Friends, we are here to consecrate this resting place, to release this human form, and to commit the soul of our dear one His/Her Name into the care and keeping of God. But we would remember that this garment of the physical body used for a time is not the reality of the one we loved. Therefore, let not this grave and its marker be a reminder of our loss. Rather, let it always be a symbol of the life that was lived, life that is one with us in eternal life, life that in its ongoing seeks the fulfillment of eternal life in Spirit. In verse we read. "The Spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Almighty giveth me life." (Job 33:4) "It is
the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words
that I have spoken unto you are spirit, and are life." Let us Pray: Our Father, in whom we live, move, and have our being, and from whom we draw every breath of life, Thou who art life, Spirit and Truth, quicken anew with Thy Spirit of truth our hearts and minds, that we may know the Truth concerning life: that we may know that life alone is real and true and eternal. Inasmuch as we are partakers of Thy life we have life everlasting in Thee. Gracious Spirit, bless and be consciously with us in all Thy promises: "I will not leave you desolate." (John 14:18) "Lo, I am with you always." (Matt.28:20) "The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts…." (Phil. 4:7) The spirit, which is immortal, eternal, has laid aside this body, which we now lovingly return to the elements from which it came. We know there is no separation in Spirit, through Spirit we are eternally united one with another. We are as close in spirit to this loved one out of the body as we are to those who physically stand around us. We know that infinite love enfolds and protects us all. Let the peace of divine compassion fill our hearts as we place our loved one Her Name in the ever loving care of God. Committal Let us now consecrate this final resting place in prayer. Let us pray: God, we know that You are here as everywhere. We know that You consecrate this place and receive this human form. In its transition, we commit to Your care and keeping the soul we love. To our dear one this true spiritual being, we say: "There shall be a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness." (Isa. 61:3) We lift our eyes above and beyond "the valley of the shadow of death" (Psalms 23:4) to the sunrise of a new day and to a new life. We bless our dear one in his/her journey forward, and we loose him/her and let him/her go. As we turn to face the work that lies before us, we know that all the good we have shared with this one makes us richer and better able to fulfill our part in the challenge of living. We thank You, God, for Your love and ever-present light on our way. Amen.
